Chennai, April 13 (PL) People across Tamil Nadu today held 'Nandana' - Tamil New Year and the auspicious day of 'Chithirai' and took part in dawn services in temples, praying for a prosperous year ahead. The houses were decorated with palm leaves, as people exchanged New Year greetings with friends and family.
Tamil Nadu, K Rosaiah Governor and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has extended his greetings to people on occasion. The state government also celebrated the new year today with the Chief Minister of Tamil poets in honor awards and cash prizes.
The Jayalalithaa government came to power last year overturned the decision of the previous DMK regime to change the Tamil New Year from the first day of Chithirai to Thai (January). A report from Madurai said thousands of devotees thronged various temples in the southern districts, including the famous Sri Meenakshi temple here on occasion.
The enclosure around the sanctum was decorated with garlands of flowers, while the goddess Meenakshi was adorned with a crown of diamonds and gold sari. A report from Pondicherry said Lt. Governor Iqbal Singh, Prime Minister N Rangasamy, Union Minister V Narayanasamy, VA Subramanian Congress leader greeted the people on occasion.
He said there was no great career in the temples, where special poojas were conducted, as people offered worship to the deities who preside.
